My personal complaint to the game industry | |
Ive been into games since the early 90ies, i (german male) grew up among english and american people, own an audio studio, composed add on music for several games,
created speech patches for games, went into VR a while ago, currently bringing games into VR with "VorpX". You can say i am a passioned gamer. If you think my english should be good enough to play an "english" game ? Youre wrong ! .. which brings me to the point. First, there are so many different accents spoken (in games too), that even if your native language is english, you have problems with undertstanding them. - Besides... In the times of lowres pixel adventures of the early 90ies there was no other way then to interact with the game or getting details about the story but writing text on the screen. - This is where first games have been localized by translating text into the language where the game is going to be distributed and Thats where a bad habbit began. I call it a bad habbit (mildly spoken), someone else would probably call it lazyness or ignorance while making money. I am talking about game manufacturers (what a luck the best ones like bethesda for example) never started selling games without proper localisation to foreign language regions. Here and there you heard people complaining, some developers delivered translation updates for their games, other didnt bother at all.- Now, almost 30 years later in the age of high tech gaming (4k,8k,VR) for example, most games come with a speech output, (ok, some Jump n Run or cardgames dont require that really), Manufacturers are still going after that habbit not translating their games properly or not at all. Many manufacturers seem to think reading text lines within a fast and crazy fight scene would be "ok" for those foreign players that never complain, they seem to overlook that in the days of VR you dont want to read text in the middle of a fight, you want to have a VR experience and not play a Monkey Island 1 text adventure. Do i wonder ? Not really because not many people complain hard enough. Though not having a proper sound and speech experience breaks every game down to a crippled 20% gaming experience that quickly ends up in the bin. Is THAT what the devs want ? I am writing this because i recently brought more then 600 games into VR and too many games lack of a proper translation. Reading text in a VR game is just not acceptable anymore (never was). Its like driving a mercedes on 5 inch wheels not going faster then 7mph. Dont tell me those games werent intended to be in VR, i am talking about a major thing, games have always been crippled like that, on one hand you can play on highest resoltions, on the other hand you spoil those nice HD graphics with text lines. How rediculous is that when somone puts "all his power" into making a game ? I do not think this will ever change, Fallout 4, WHAT an experience, you understand every single word, Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice, they even have a VR version out, everyone has been waiting for those unique motion things to finally view on sceen, i am shure noone has been waiting for this to appear in VR, spoiled with textlines. How uncomfortable is that ? The other day i "mistakely" bought another one of these "great" games, was so disappointed through the said above, even offered the game company a FREE german speed patch for their game. Guess what - they denied ! Just what do they have on their mind ? - Dont they want to create a game that everyone buys, that brings huge money ? It seems many simply Dont. I just dont get how they expect to make big money by crippling their products down to another "bingame", arent they gamers like us ? Imagine Microsoft had decided years ago to sell their software in english or chinese only for example. Everyone understands that would have been just stupid. - Noone wants to read text lines in the age of modern gaming. Thank you for reading - Merry Christmas RJ Kole Dec.2019 |
